Story

I purcahsed this Allard J2X in 2015 from a long time high school friend, Mike DiCola, who ran a shop that specialized in Allards and Arnolt Bristols. Mike had purchased the car totally disassembled in 2000. Some detective work proved it was the J2X commissioned by famed race car driver Erwin Goldschmidt from the Allard Motor works, to replace his Allard J2, with which he won the 1950 Watkins Geln Grand Prix. The car had disappeared for near 50 years, and was found sitting in a garage in Ohio. The car was about 80% complete. Unfortuantely, Mike became ill and was unable to start the restoration at which time I offered to buy the car. Fortune smiled upon me as shortly after the purchase, Mike located the remaining parts in another garage only 20 miles from where he purchased the car. The only missing piece was the twin 2 barrel Detroit racing manifold. Detroit Racing was one of the premier speed shops in the 1950's and built a high output Cadillac 331 motor for the car which severed as the basis for the Cadillac HO motor introduced in 1953. Documentation included with the car includes a letter from Cadillac Motor Division to this effect. A search was started, and after several month a new old stock manifold was found and purchased. A 7 year restoration process was undertaken to bring the care back to period correct state. Virtually every structural and mechanical component had to be either rebuilt of fabricated. This involved more than 25 shops and craftsmen in the US and England. The car is fully dcumented with correspondence between Zora Duntov, the build mange for this car at Allard Motor Works and Goldschmidt.
